How Perplexity answers
Perplexity is built around search. For most questions it searches the web in real time, reads the results and writes an answer with numbered citations that link to its sources. It indexes pages with its own crawler, PerplexityBot, and fetches pages live as Perplexity-User when a question needs them.
Because each answer is put together from what the search finds at that moment, the sources can change from one day to the next. Perplexity hasn't published in detail how it ranks them.

Perplexity reads pages live, so outdated prices, dates or product names can end up in its answers. Update them, and show when the page was last updated.

The sources Perplexity cites for your prompts are the sites to be mentioned on. The gap view shows where competitors are cited and you aren't.
